Senator Creigh Deeds is still recovering at The University of Virginia Medical Center. His condition has been upgraded to fair.
Sen. Deeds was initially in critical condition earlier Tuesday, when he arrived by helicopter. The helicopter had picked him up at a relative's farm in Bath County.
Police say the senator arrived at the Medical Center with serious injuries from being stabbed multiple times in the head and torso.
Hospital officials say they don't typically comment on security procedures, but a CBS19 crew noticed heightened security earlier in the day. Two or three Virginia state police troopers blocked the entrance to the emergency department, questioning people before they entered. The lockdown was lifted later in the day, though police officers could still be seen walking around the facility.
Despite his injuries, Sen. Deeds has been able to talk with investigators.
