A new alternative to nursing home care for the elderly is now open in Charlottesville.
The Blue Ridge PACE center had its grand opening Monday morning. PACE stands for "Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly.
The center is designed to be an adult day-care service for Charlottesville and the surrounding areas. It allows nursing home-eligible seniors to continue to live at home, while still having a facility to provide care during the day.
PACE includes recreation, physical and speech therapy, a library, pharmacy and a full-service clinic.
"We provide the medical and the social and the restorative support, to allow people to reach their maximum physical, social and medical functioning,” Blue Ridge Pace Site Director Jocelyn Reeder said.
"I think it's a great idea,” says Senator Mark Warner It's one more step in trying to make sure that our parents and grandparents can live their lives with the kind of dignity they deserve."
The center in Charlottesville can cater to nearly 200 adults. There are more than 80 PACE programs around the United States.
