Democrat Mark Warner is up for re-election in 2014.
The talk over who the Republicans will have face off with him has already started.

Virginia republicans took some losses last month, losing all three statewide offices...although there is still a recount pending for one seat. So it would surprise nobody if they came out in force for this senate seat that is opening up.

So what would a Republican candidate need to beat Mark Warner?

Geoff Skelley of the University of Virginia Center for Politics says there are two major factors.

"They are going to have to find somebody that can raise a lot of money pretty quickly and someone who can appeal statewide. The problem with beating Mark Warner is that he is probably the most popular politician in the state and he also has a lot of money."

Former Republican National Committee Chair Ed Gillespie has said he is thinking about making a run. E.W. Jackson's name has come up once again. So has state Senator Jeff McWaters.

Ken Cuccinelli said in a weekend interview that he will not run this time and neither will Governor Bob Mcdonnell.
