There could be a shortage of wreaths to lie at Arlington National Cemetery this holiday season.

Every December, volunteers place holiday wreaths at tens of thousands of gravesites there. But this year, the Wreaths Across America organization says donations are down, and they may fall short of their goal by about 35,000 wreaths.

The group plans to lay wreaths this Saturday, Dec. 14, but they still need $500,000 to meet their goal.

"That tells me that people never forget these people and appreciate what they've done... and how they've served,” Doug Sanford said during a visit to the cemetery. “And that's just... I guess... you might say... a token of their appreciation."

The organization's president hopes there will be a late rush of donations. Last year, they covered about one-third of the graves at Arlington.
