UVa. Children's Hospital Creates Holiday Shop for Patient's Families

Dec. 20, 2013

The University of Virginia Medical Center transformed an area of the hospital into Santa's workshop on Friday. The "Season's Treating Shoppe" gave parents an opportunity to pick out presents for their children who are patients in the hospital.

The University of Virginia Children's Hospital Committee and the UVa. Hospital Education Program set up the shop right in the hospital for parents wouldn't have to leave to get gifts for their children. Volunteer Beth Kennan is a former patient of UVa. Children's Hospital and knows how difficult spending Christmas there can be.

"If they are spending their holiday at UVa. it's probably not the place they want to be," said Kennan."We want to do something to brighten their holidays."

Toys and gifts were available for girls and boys of all ages, from sports fans to Barbie lovers. Lindsey Denby's three-month-old son, Blake, has been in the hospital over the past few weeks while her husband is deployed overseas. Denby picked out toys for Blake and his two-year-old sister.

"It was just an overwhelming sense of joy that I had because I haven't been able to do any Christmas shopping for my kids. This gesture was unbelievable," Denby said.

All of the toys were donated by Mason's Toy Box and other community organizations. The event was free for the families.
