Charlottesville firefighters reached out to the Latino community they serve.

The seventh annual Firehouse Posada took place at the Charlottesville Fire Department on Ridge Street on Friday evening.

About 300 adults and kids turned out to hear carols, swing at piñatas, get a toy from Santa, eat tamales and doughnuts, and meet the men and women who can help them in emergencies.

"We try to mix both of the cultures, Mexican cultures and American culture," said Felippe Mendoza.

Mendoza helped to organize the night and found the Posada to help children learn fire safety and Latino children and their parents learn that firefighters are safe.

"The fire department puts a lot of time and effort to host the posada and to reach the goal to be a friendly face within the Latino community," said Mendoza.

"We're proud to bring different members of our community to our department and celebrate with them," said Richard Jones, the Charlottesville Fire Department's Battalion Chief and Community Outreach Officer.

Other groups helped out, too. Toys for Tots provided the toys Santa gave out for the fifth year. The Church of the Incarnation sang the carols.
