UPDATE: Power Restored to Majority of Areas

January 4, 2014

UPDATE: Crews with Dominion Virginia Power worked throughout the day Saturday to restore power to the more than 20,000 homes and businesses without power. As of 9:00 P.M., all power had been restored in Albemarle County and Nelson County.

Nearly 20,000 people woke up to no power Saturday morning in Central Virginia, on one of the coldest days of the year. According to the Facebook page of Dominion Virginia Power, an equipment failure at a transmission substation near Waynesboro caused the power outage. Crews are working to fix the problem but it could be late afternoon before power is restored.

As of noon on Saturday, more than 10,500 people in Waynesboro were without power. Nearly 9,000 in Augusta County and 164 in Western Albemarle County were also without power.

According to Dominion, crews are working in phases to restore power to ease load on the system. Dominion is also asking customers without power to unplug appliances and turn off lights to prevent additional outages as power is being restored.
