The third day wraps up in the trial of the murder of a young Charlottesville mother.
The Commonwealth has taken three days to present its evidence and they saved their star witness for last.
The accused 39-year-old Billy Marshal Jr. is charged with second degree murder in the strangling death of 18-year-old Azlee Hickman. Authorities say the murder happened inside the trailer home Hickman shared with her boyfriend Ronnie Powell.
Powell took the stand today and told jurors he saw Marshall with his hands around Hickman’s neck the night she died and that he tried to pull Marshall off the girl but that Marshall pulled a knife on him and he got scared.
The defense claims Powell was scared of something else too--.that he feared Hickman’s mother would have him charged with statutory rape.
Marshall faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
