Thursday night the Charlottesville School Board agreed on a $61 million operating budget for the 2006 – 2007 school year.

This year's budget is a 5% increase from last year's, but with that increase came a few cuts.

The administrative position, director of school improvements, held by Dr. Laura Purnell was eliminated.

Some positions made their way back into the 2006 - 2007 budget. The career counselor at Charlottesville High School was reinstated. Also added were the coordinator positions for social studies and science.

Although incoming superintendent Rosa Atkins hasn't officially started her position, she is staying in contact with the board and their decisions.

“Mrs. Atkins has weighed in on these issues and she is in favor of these two positions [both coordinator positions],” said Ned Michie, Charlottesville School Board. ”She thinks these [positions] can make a big difference in raising the achievement of all our children.”

The board will now submit their proposal to the Charlottesville Board of Supervisors.
