A University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of hitting a police officer has been taken off the team.

Carl Walrath pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor assault. The 21-year-old was originally charged with a felony. Police say he punched an officer in the face last November after a confrontation on the Corner.

University of Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage released the following statement to the Newsplex:

"I've determined that Carl Walrath will not return to participate in our men's lacrosse program and have met with him to inform him of this decision. We thank him for his contributions to the program and wish him the best in the future."

Walrath received a 10-day jail sentence.
