Moneta Man Shot after Being Mistaken for Intruder

MONETA, Va. (AP) - A woman has told Franklin County authorities that she fatally shot her boyfriend when he returned home early and unannounced from a business trip and she mistook him for an intruder.

The sheriff's office says in a news release that it happened Friday in the Moneta home the woman shared with her boyfriend, 37-year-old Herbert Aragon Jr. The woman told deputies she had just given her toddler a bath and noticed that the front door, which she had locked, was open. Afraid an intruder was inside, she got her handgun and began searching. She said she fired after being startled by a man.

Aragon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Roanoke Times reports ( ) no charges have been filed, and the woman was not identified. The investigation is continuing.
