Firehouse Watches Albemarle Co. Referee Officiate Super Bowl

February 2, 2014

Football fans around the country and the world cheered on the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos in Sunday's Super Bowl.

But a group in Crozet spent the evening rooting for someone else on the field, too.

A firehouse is an unusual place to take in a Super Bowl game, but that's the annual gathering place for the men and women of the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department.

"Everybody brings a dish and we eat and enjoy the time and watch the Super Bowl," said Chief Preston Gentry.

Watching the game, and watching for number 16. Not a player -- but referee David Wyant.

Wyant is an associate member of the fire department.

"It's not very often do you get to have one of your local people in the Super Bowl, whether they're referees or football players," said Gentry.

Wyant has been an NFL referee for more than 20 years, but never made it to the game of all games -- until now.

"He told me that after he finished this game, he was retiring, but he wanted to get in the Super Bowl game one time before he retires," said Gentry. "So this was a goal he finally achieved and was very exciting to be doing and we're very excited about it."

"We've all probably seen David do games from time to time, but for him to do the Super Bowl is kind of special," said Captain Glenn Fink.

Wyant served as side judge for the game.
