Officials urged drivers to stay off the roads Wednesday night, as the falling snow caused several problems with slick spots across Central Virginia.

State Police fielded 890 calls for service and responded to nearly 350 traffic crashes. Most accidents were minor, while one fatal crash occurred Wednesday afternoon in Halifax County.

Virginia State Route 53 was closed off for a portion of the afternoon due to a wreck near the Albemarle County line. Several drivers ended up in a ditch along Buck Island Road. A tow truck driver had to be pulled out of the ditch.

The Virginia Department of Transportation had more than 2,500 crew members and contractors treating roads and plowing snow overnight, and officials urged drivers to stay off the roads.
