The 30 acre brush fire in Albemarle County put nearby residents on alert. Fire officials said the fire came dangerously close to neighboring homes.

Joe Bailey said all he remembers is seeing flames coming very close to his home.

"It came within 100 feet of the house and yeah I was a little nervous," said Joe Bailey.

For hours Albemarle County fire fighters fought a 30 acre brush fire in the middle of the Rosslyn Ridge subdivision. Bailey and other neighbors were put on alert.

Since it came so close to their houses some residents chose to leave their homes themselves and help the professionals fight the flames.

"We started bringing out a hose and washing down houses," said Joe Bailey.

Bailey quickly realized the winds were too strong to handle. "The wind changed and was going away from the house and it looked pretty safe and then changed again and came back towards the house," said Joe Bailey.

Although it took hours to contain fire crews from all over the area were able to keep the flames from claiming Bailey's home. None of the homes in the area were damaged either.

Fire crews say most of the homeowners weren't even home at the time. Officials say there is still significant smoke on Hydraulic Road due to those high winds.
