DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) - A 46-year-old Dinwiddie County man is scheduled for a March 18 court appearance on charges he embezzled more than $100,000 from a trust fund established to defray the medical costs of a 9-year-old boy.

An indictment accuses Floyd W. Abernathy III of five counts of embezzlement over a four-year period starting in 2008.

According to media reports, Abernathy was a friend of the family of the boy, who has a rare genetic disease. He is accused of draining money from the fund.

Hundreds of people have given to the fund.

Abernathy has been released on $5,000 bond.
