Albemarle County Firefighters Raise Awareness on Fire Safety Day

March 1, 2014

Saturday's event took place at the Pantops Shopping Center.

Several fire agencies talking with the public about general safety.

Albemarle County, Stony Point and East Rivanna fire rescue crews all had representatives on site to answer any questions.

Fun activities for kids included a smokehouse to show what smoke does inside a home, an escape ladder exercise and a demonstration on how to use fire extinguishers.

"We as human beings, we think, it's not going to happen to us. By talking about these events and developing plans to protect us from these events it increases our ability to survive and not be affected by them," said Howard Lagomarsino, Albemarle County Fire Marshal.

Organizers want to remind people that because of the low humidity during this time of year fires can spread quickly.

They are urging everyone to be alert.
