Family and friends are mourning the deaths of two people after they were killed in a fire early Sunday morning in Albemarle County. Fire officials said a burning cigarette was likely the cause of the house fire that killed the elderly Keswick Couple.
Gary Wood lost his parents and spent the day trying to salvage what is left of the home. He could collect only a few items from his parent's home, as most of it was destroyed.
Albemarle County fire officials are still investigating the cause, but said it looks like the fire started in the front part of the home.
“Right now it's undetermined exactly what the cause is, but based on the area of origin, we can't rule out smoking,” said Albemarle Fire Chief Dan Eggleston.
Although neither Gary nor many of his family members wanted to speak on camera, he did share a few tidbits about his parents. He was proud to share that his father Reginald Wood was creative, and built the home's fireplace himself.
As his family tries to salvage what they can, Gary says his parents will not be forgotten.
Fire officials said there were no smoke detectors found inside the home, and this tragic story is just another reminder of how important those devices can be.
