Shipp Speaks Out About Zug Announcement

March 13, 2014

Albemarle County Clerk of Courts Debra Shipp is firing back after Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Jon Zug announces plans to run for her position in the next election.

Zug says the reason he is running is because the clerk’s office has been mismanaged for the past several years.

Shipp says the clerk's office handles over 800 responsibilities and duties for the county. These duties include marriage licenses, hand gun permits, criminal and civil matters. Adding the office is understaffed and the job looks easier from the outside looking in.

“Being an attorney and coming from a Commonwealth Attorney office does not qualify you to do everything in that office,” said Shipp. “Being a Commonwealth attorney you dealt with criminal matters and jury trials. Those two things are only two of the many things we do in our office.”

Shipp has held the position since 2008. Zug is the first candidate to come forward.

The election is in November 2015.
