A Russell County man is being held without bond on child abuse and abduction charges following an AMBER Alert activation for his son.

Jimmy D. Guinn, 67, is being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail on one felony count of child abuse and one felony count of child abduction.

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office began their investigation on Wednesday, March 19, when no one was able to find Lucas after he left school. Further investigation led the sheriff’s office to confirm the boy was with his father, Jimmy D. Guinn, and was believed to be in imminent danger.

On Thursday, the Russell Co. Sheriff’s Office requested the Va. State Police to activate an AMBER Alert to find Lucas. Within minutes of the activation, calls and tips began coming in to the sheriff’s office and state police about possible sightings of the suspect vehicle, a tractor-trailer with a purple cab and the words “Snowbird Trucking” on the side of the trailer.

During the course of the investigation, Russell Co. investigators have determined that Lucas had been taken to Michigan and traveled back through West Virginia since his initial disappearance.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Friday, March 21, a tip was called in about the tractor-trailer being seen on Interstate 81 in Washington County, Va. A Washington Co. Sheriff’s Deputy stopped the tractor-trailer in the southbound lanes of I-81 near the 10 mile marker and safely recovered Lucas. His father was taken into custody without incident.

The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are pending.
