Three Found Guilty in the Downtown Mall Attack

March 21, 2014

Four suspects faced assault charges after the December 20th attack on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.

Malcolm Stevenson and Richard Spears were found guilty of assault and face jail time. Stevenson received ten days, while Spears got 40 days in jail.

Jeanne Doucette, who was an alleged victim in the case, was also found guilty of assault and is facing a $100 fine.

Mark Adams, another victim in the assault, had his charges dropped after a judge heard testimony that he never hit anyone during the altercation.

A dozen people, including witnesses and police, testified in court during the Friday trial. All four of the accused agreed that alcohol was a major factor in the case.

It was believed that Spears actually began the incident by laughing at how intoxicated Adams appeared to be, trying to stand up near the Wells Fargo bank.

Doucette then became angry and pushed Spears, who then retaliated with a punch to her face.

Stevenson came in to break up the altercation, but then ended up holding Adams back and allowing him to fall on the ground in front of him.

The mother of Spears spoke out after the trial and believes the judge’s punishment was not correct.

“It was one sided, a slap on the wrist $100 dollars,” says Georgene Spears. “I don't agree, because I think a little bit more should be done.”

Georgene Spears believed that Doucette did not receive enough punishment as her son and Stevenson.

“It was clearly said in court that he was protecting himself,” says Spears. “I think they should've been a little more lenient on the guys.”
