To help bridge the achievement gap for students in the commonwealth, a new program is in the works. Dr. Tierney Fairchild spoke to the League of Women Voters Tuesday about The Virginia Turnaround Specialist Program. This program, created by Governor Warner's Administration and continued by Governor Kaine's Administration, centers on turning around low performing schools in the state through leadership.

This program works by "bringing Principals and their District Teams together to focus on how they will together improve the student achievement in these buildings", explained Dr. Fairchild.

This program has only been around since 2003, but has already shown success. Seven out of the ten schools who implemented it made Adequate Yearly Progress. Schools that are chosen need to meet a certain criteria.
