Simply put, we have too many wineries and not enough vineyards. The demand for Virginia wine has increased significantly, and grape growers are having a tough time keeping up. The popularity of Virginia-made wine has increased significantly, and local wineries have noticed the boost.
"Both in sales, as well as the number of wineries that have popped up here in the last, certainly in the last 10 years, and even still in the last 4 or 5 years continues," says Paul Seehaver, a wine host at Blenheim Winery and Vineyard.
Many wineries and vineyards make and sell their own wine, and with a completely internal operation have few issues with supply and demand. Others have to import more grapes to help complete the process.
"All the grapes that we grow here all go into our wine, and we also buy grapes from growers that we work with to produce our full lots of wine," Seehaver explains.
Whenever vineyards see this increase in demand, they find locations to plant more grape vines. Ultimately the one to decide whether it's going to be a good or bad year comes down to Mother Nature.
