Dogs and owners have a new place to get together.

The Clifton Inn in Albemarle County held its first Yappy Hour Thursday evening.

People and their canine companions gathered outside the inn. They could explore the 100-acre property, including its pond.

"We really just wanted to reach out to the community," said said restaurant manager Derek Hunt as he held his Golden Retriever Finch, one of two dogs he brought. "'s got a lot of dogs."

The inn had $5 glasses of beer and wine for humans and made free amuse-bouches for owners and dog treats for dogs. People and dogs could stay for a 50 percent discount off dinner.

"It was a fun opportunity for us," said Hunt. "I, myself, have two dogs. Our general manager has two dogs. Our accountant has five. So, I mean, we love dogs here. We're definitely dog people, and we just want the community to come and enjoy it."

The Yappy Hours will continue every Thursday evening indefinitely. Hunt says they may reevaluate when cold, snowy weather returns this winter.

Ten percent of the proceeds went donated to Caring for Creatures, a Fluvanna County animal sanctuary.

Owners must have dogs on a leash and pick up after them. For other rules and information, visit the Clifton Inn's website.
