Coors Brewing Company is moving its east coast brewing operations to Elkton, Virginia, but to do that it needs to transport 40 fermenting tanks Fredericksburg, a process that takes over half a day.

They aren't ordinary trucks; they are carrying cargo that is 70 feet long and weighs 70,000 pounds.

"They are among the largest loads that have ever been permitted to travel on Virginia's highways and there are 40 of them," said VDOT Spokesperson Lou Hatter.

These are the largest convoys yet, including five trucks and six police escorts. The most recent rolling roadblock left Fredericksburg at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night, hopped on Rt. 29 South, and took Rt. 33 West over the mountain into Rockingham County.

"Traffic will be allowed to proceed in front of the convoy and then will be allowed to roll behind the convoy, but what we don't want to do is have traffic mixing in with those convoy vehicles because these are tremendously large pieces of equipment," said Hatter.

There about 30 vehicles in the convoy including cranes to raise power lines and traffic signals when the trucks come through.

"What motorists will find is that they are going to have delays because of the reduced speeds that these convoys are traveling at compared to the speed limit on the roads. Then there will be brief delays as they approach intersections, while they stop traffic and allow the trucks to maneuver through intersections, underneath lights and things," said Hatter.

If you want to see them in person, they should be passing our area, turning from Rt. 29 South to Rt. 33 West on Sunday and Wednesday mornings between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m., through the beginning of April.
