Albemarle County Police say a truck wreck on Monacan Trail and near the intersection of Red Hill Road is causing some problems for phone and internet services in that area.

A box truck carrying medical waste overturned on Route 29 south, before 2 p.m., taking out some wires belonging to CenturyLink.

Police tweeted on Monday that the truck hit a fiber optics box, which knocked out cell and landline service for a southern portion of the county.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

"The driver is not sure what happened. The right front tire dropped off the edge of the roadway and he couldn't control the truck anymore," said Officer David Rhodes of the Albemarle County Police Department. "There was heavy rain during the crash and the shoulder is very soft, so once you get off the edge of the roadway, it's hard to recover from that."

CenturyLink service is out in the North Garden and Covesville areas. Representatives from the company say it will not be restored until 6:00 a.m. Tuesday at the earliest.

Even though service is out, it didn't take long for the news to spread.

"It's all people want to talk about," said Michael McCarthy.

McCarthy owns Dr. Ho's Humble Pie, which is right down the road from the scene of the crash.

On a typical day, about half their business is called in, but phone and internet service were down at the pizza shop all afternoon and evening.

"You know, being a to-go pizza spot, I guess we're not going to do any to-go business," said McCarthy.

McCarthy says he isn't too concerned about the outage; the shop is getting by just fine.

"The problem with these days is everyone is so self-reliant on this stuff, so when there's a little glitch or a few hours of something like this without cell phone reception or internet or a phone line period, people start to freak out. You just have to take it in stride," he said. "You should just enjoy the time away from technology, you know?"

Albemarle County Police say if there is an emergency, call 9-1-1 first. If you cannot make a call, the North Garden Fire Station will be staffed overnight with the ability to radio for proper help.

County police will also be patrolling the area.

Any questions about when service will be restored should be directed to CenturyLink.
