All-Female Engineering Group Heads to Global Competition

A group of students at Albemarle High School is going global.

This May, the all-girl engineering squad will be competing in an international innovation competition, called Destination Imagination.

"I defintely think it's important for girls to get opportunities to explore engineering," said freshman Elly Haden.

The group has been competing together since middle school in the "technical" category. This year's challenge was to design a machine that could detect objects in a container, open the container, and move an object across a room. The girls creation uses electrical currents to complete the challenge.

"When I was in sixth grade we first picked the technical challenge, and that was probably the hardest year because we knew nothing about technical or how to build a car. It was so much fun and we learned so much that ever since then it's been something we are really passionate about," said junior Abby Haden.

Destination Imagine forces the students to be creative as they must not only write and perform a play that showcases the use of the machine, but design costumes and sets as well.

"It's interesting how we can mix science and technology with the arts, so everyone can do something they are good at or they like doing," said Junior Teresa Lei.

The year-long project has given the girls has challenged the girls, and push them to think outside the box..and their comfort zone.

"You learn so much. Every single year you learn something different. It can be teamwork, or it can be a technical skill, you learn so many things and that is why we keep coming back. It's so much fun," said sophomore Madison Gildersleeve-Price.

After earning top spots in the state and regional level, they are excited to head to the global competition, and mingle with the 16,000 other students from across the globe.

"It's so unique, having so many cultures and people from all over the world, but at the same time you are all there for the same reason and you all have this one thing that brings you together," said Haden.

The cost per student to attend Destination Imagination's Global Finals is almost $700. The groups is fundraising and any donations can be sent directly to Albemarle High School.
