An Orange County woman wins the top prize of $1 million from a Virginia Lottery scratcher.

Patty Meadows didn’t have an easy time driving home from the grocery store on Monday. She knew she had a Virginia Lottery ticket worth $1 million in the car.

Meadows had stopped by the Food Lion on Madison Road in Orange Co. to pick up a few things. She also bought a 20X the Money scratcher ticket. Meadows went out to her car and scratched it.

At first, she didn’t realize what she’d won.

“I knew I’d got my money back anyway,” Meadows said. “Then I started screaming!”

Meadows had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $766,500 before taxes. She chose the cash option.

The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Meadows said she hopes to use her winnings to take care of her family.

Prizes for 20X the Money range from $10 to $1 million.
