A North Carolina man was stopped by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Charlottesville Albemarle Airport last night after finding a loaded .38 caliber handgun in the man's carry-on bag.

According to the TSA, the gun had five rounds of ammunition in it and was confiscated by Charlottesville Public Safety Police. The man was not arrested, but was cited on a local weapons charge.

Weapons and ammunition are not permitted in carry-on bags, but can be transported in checked bags if they are unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline.

The TSA advises passengers to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.
