Connecting local employers with local people who are looking for a job, that’s the focus of the Charlottesville Community Spring Job Fair, and with more than 70 employers at John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday, there were plenty of opportunities.
"The employers here today collectively probably have between 800 and 1,000 open positions. Some employers have a few, and some employers have 100 plus, we have a couple new employers today that are opening so they are looking to fully staff their local" said Chief of Workforce Development Strategies for the City of Charlottesville Hollie Lee.
Rick Izze has one position available at Combined Insurance of America. He says meeting with candidates who are already familiar with the community makes it easier to find the best possible person for the job.
“We certainly would want to recruit from within, hopefully someone who would know the area, has a network or maybe can bring some addition individuals into the opportunity as well." said Izze.
But not everyone was looking for a job, some people where there to help folks land a job. Leslie Berner, owner of Legz Resume Design Studio was looking over resumes and giving out tips to help candidates make the right impression.
"The resume is what's going to get them in the door. The recruiter is going to spend about two to three seconds and either move it from the pile or take a second glance," said Berner.
Job seekers, employers and people offering resume critiques all agree that the ability to meet face -to-face is what makes a job fair a great opportunity.
“You can actually walk up to the table, introduce yourself to an individual. Maybe you submitted an application online, but now you can come up and put a face to with a name, so the employer can say 'oh yeah I remember your application, let me give that another look,’" said Lee.
Organizers say nearly 1,200 job-seekers attended today's job fair.
