Residents in one local neighborhood are breathing a sigh of relief after a man accused of sexually assaulting a young girl was caught. According to police, a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a man after he apparently broke into her family's home on Ridgeway Lane in Albemarle County.
The incident happened Friday afternoon. When police arrived at the home, the man was gone, but the girl was able to give a detailed description of him. While officers searched the area for the man, they received a tip from a neighbor, that led them to his abandoned car at a nearby farm. The suspect, identified as Joseph E. Osbourne of Albemarle County, took off by foot, but a police dog found him and he was arrested.
Osbourne was charged with Assault and Battery, on both the victim and a neighbor who came to the aid of the 13-year-old. He was also charged with Forcible Sodomy and Breaking and Entering.
Police say Osbourne was treated at UVA hospital after his arrest for a broken foot, but it's unclear how he was injured.
Saturday night police would not comment on how Osbourne got into the girl's home, but they did say that the investigation into the crime is ongoing.
