Construction crews are hard at work this summer making improvements to the Charlottesville High School.
“The orchestra has grown from 8 students that I had in 1982 to 140 string players this year, so the space that we were in was really becoming quite confining,” orchestra teacher, Laura Mulligan Thomas said.
A larger orchestra room is just one of several construction projects underway to upgrade parts of CHS, which was built back in the mid 1970's
“The gymnasium is original to the school, the bleachers and the floor were original construction, and it was long over due for replacement due to condition and life cycle,” project manager, Tim Breitenbach said.
The projects are a culmination of efforts that began last fall.
“The school graciously gave us access to the space in mid-may before the end of school, because we knew that it was too much work to fit into one summer,” Breitenbach said.
With just a few weeks left before the start of the new school year, project managers say construction is right on schedule.
“We will be ready to go for the first day of school. We're down to minor details like the color of the paint on the floor and some final touches with some trim work and putting the wall padding in,” athletic director, Rick Lilly said.
According to the CHS athletic director, the new facility will impact students and the entire community.
“We'll be able to appropriately use the resources we have now to accommodate not only the athletic teams, but the gym classes and the City Parks and Recs offerings,” Lilly said.
Faculty and staff say the new facilities are sign of new beginnings.
“We've had championship basketball teams for a number of years now, last year we went to he state quarter finals in both the boys and girls basketball seasons and now we have a championship facility that appropriately address the needs that we have,” Lilly said.
“I think the orchestra students are going to be so pleased. They're gonna be so excited to be in here making music,” Mulligan Thomas said.
The price tag for the projects is just more than $800,000. Project managers say they will finish within or under the initial budget.
Other projects include changes to the fine arts corridor, a new restroom and expansion to the physical training room.
