In Madison County, a car crash leaves one person dead.

The single-vehicle accident happened at 9:15 a.m. Thursday on Route 231, a mile south of Hughes River Road.

State Police say the driver of a 2002 Toyota 4 door, 22-year-old Kimberly Erin Schwaner of Charlottesville, lost control in a curve. The vehicle spun off the road and struck a tree on the passenger’s side.

The passenger, 27-year-old James Anthony Tubbs of Waynesboro, died at the scene of the accident.

Schwaner was taken to the hospital, though there is no word on her injuries.

Officials say speed appears to be the main factor in the crash, and that both were wearing seatbelts.

The crash is under investigation.
