UVa Families Set Up Camp at CWS

The Virginia baseball families who are along for the ride on the Cavaliers' trip to the College World Series have found away to make themselves at home in Omaha.

They've set up camp just across the Iowa state line, in the parking lot of the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs -- in a fleet of more than a dozen recreational vehicles.

"A bunch of us decided that this was going to be an adventure," said Chuck Waddell, the father of UVa sophomore pitcher Brandon Waddell. "And we wanted to stay together, instead of being all over town. So we thought what better way than to find an RV park that would be able to accommodate us."

"When we came here, this is what we had planned," said Joe McCarthy, whose son Joe is a sophomore outfielder for UVa. "We wanted to be all together, and we have most of our people here. And that's what we're all about. Being together, enjoying this together."

The families and fans started arriving in Omaha late last week -- some by car, others by plane. The RVs came from a nearby dealership that's owned by a family friend of the O'Connors.

The fans have set up a wide-screen television at one of the RVs, as well as an inflatable pool. And on Sunday night, the Cavaliers gave their families a victory to celebrate.

"It's been great, except for the weather has sometimes been a little challenging with the hail and stuff, potentially," said Waddell. "But other than that, we've been out here every night."

"Oh, we wouldn't miss this for the world. What a Father's Day yesterday. What a gift," said McCarthy. "We're still a little woozy right now from last night, but we're having a ball."

Each of the RVs can sleep at least six, and the group can shower and do laundry in a nearby building in the parking lot. So if the Cavaliers keep extending their stay with more wins, their families are set for the duration.

"We are reserved here, and all these trailers are taken care of, to one day past championship," said Waddell. "So we plan on celebrating hard that night, and then we'll all pack, and get on our planes and cars, and we'll head back."
