The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approves the proposed improvement plans for Route 29.

Late Wednesday morning, the CTB voted in favor of putting $203 million towards a grade-separated interchange at Rio Road, as well as studying a similar interchange at Hydraulic Road.

The CTB vote to add the two interchange projects to VDOT’s six-year improvement program means the money will be allocated: There is still a design process to figure out how long construction will take and how businesses in the area will be affected.

Local officials have all endorsed the plan, but some area business owners along Rt. 29 are not completely on board.

On Tuesday, the CTB approved spending nearly $30 million in order to fund additional Amtrak train services between Lynchburg and Washington, D.C.
