Several UVa students are developing a new mentorship program for students at Walton Middle School. It's called Project Youth Uplift .
The idea is to teach leadership skills through one-on-one mentoring.
The program mostly targets at-risk seventh graders.
Organizer Jessica Cofield says middle schoolers are often overlooked, but those years can be some of the toughest.
"I'm involved with it because I personally didn't have a mentor, so I would like to give that back to someone else," said Cofield.
The programs organizers hope to enroll at least 15 students by the Fall.
