For the first time in history, Charlottesville City School Board seats will be up for election. Tonight the Charlottesville-Albemarle chapter of the NAACP sponsored a candidate’s forum for those running for Charlottesville School Board seats. There are 3 seats up for grabs, and candidates each addressed the issues surrounding the school board at tonight's forum at Gordon Street Library.

“There’s a lot of work to be done and I feel like our community is asking for change,” said candidate, Charlie Kollmansperger.

All candidates had about two minutes each to answer questions from the achievement gap to safety in schools for both teachers and students.

Candidate Juandiego Wade expressed, “the last few years we've heard a lot of concerns and issues about the school system. I want to bring solutions to the table.”

All five candidates brought solutions or at least addressed issues concerning the school system.

One of the issues most candidates agreed on was not move money from one school to another. Many agreed that could possible hurt schools that would loose funding.

“If there is additional monies that needs to be infused into this system, we [should] look at those things carefully and make sure the money is there for our instructors and our students to learn,” said candidate Leah Puryear.

The Albemarle-Charlottesville chapter of the NAACP feels that events like tonight gives many constituents a sense of who each candidate is and where they stand on concerning issues.

“It gives the community some background information on [some] views and how, if elected, they would help solve some of the problems and enhance the community in regards to educational issues, ”said chapter president Dr. M. Rick Turner.

Charlottesville School Board elections will be held on May 2.

Candidates who attend Monday night's forum were: Charlie Kollmansperger, Sue Lewis, Ned Michie (current board member), Leah Puryear and Juandiego Wade.
