The streets were filled with small twigs and leaves. Those received most of the damage, but there were many reports of downed trees and unofficially 8 wind reports throughout Central Virginia: that's winds above 58 miles per hour. That was coupled with heavy rain and a ton of lightning.
Hundreds of homes around Central Virginia lost their power to fallen power lines or trees on power lines. There was one report of a tree falling on a car.
Storms like this can sometimes be accelerated by the loss of daytime heating, and can produce a serious lightning show, that can also cause serious damage.
In these situations we can thank many police officers and sheriffs that are able to very quickly remove debris from the road and clear any areas to make them safe and passable.
