A group of UVa students spent part of the day in the dumpster looking for recyclables. About 20 of them sorted through two huge trash bins to see how much could actually be recycled. Seventy percent of what they found could've been recycled. Organizers say recycling not only helps the environment but also saves money.
"You save $21 a ton be recycling it instead of throwing it away so that could be a huge savings for the University," said Conservation Advocate Lindsey Daniels.
Estimates show only about 40 percent of trash makes it through recycling.
