A fierce storm packing powerful winds, softball-sized hail and rain toppled dozens of trees and flipped recreational vehicles at a campground on Virginia’s Eastern Shore Thursday.

Authorities say two people were killed and over 30 were injured.

The storm slammed into the Cherrystone Family Camping & RV Resort shortly before 9 a.m. today.

About 1,300 people were there when the storm hit, according to the state emergency management department.

A couple from New Jersey was killed when a tree fell on their tent this morning. Their 13-year-old son was among three dozen people who suffered injuries ranging from cuts to broken bones. At least one person is reportedly in critical condition.

Governor Terry McAuliffe released a statement, saying:

“We are all saddened by the reports of injuries and lives lost in this storm and will continue to offer our thoughts and prayers to the Virginia families who were affected, along with whatever support is necessary to help these communities move forward.”

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for the area about 9 a.m. EDT Thursday. A team was dispatched to determine if a twister had hit.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management had previously tweeted that there were three deaths and 24 injured.
