It's a mystery on the Downtown Mall. Overnight a series of posters appeared on the Landmark Hotel structure.
Thirty posters popped up on the unfinished Landmark Hotel, and on Wednesday passersby on the mall are took notice of the new sight.
"I think they look really nice. It's nice to see something different than just plain plywood on the wall," said passerby Madeline Hawks.
Who commissioned the guerilla art is unclear, but local artists say the mystery group wishes to remain anonymous. However, it is clear they hope the project draws attention to the state of the structure.
"They are obviously a political commentary about how nobody's done anything with it and the process has just dragged on for years and years. It's pretty much and eyesore to the whole community," said Scott Middlestorch who was admiring the art.
The luxury hotel was slated to be finished in 2009, but now sits incomplete after the original developer ran out of money.
While the posters are drawing attention to the building, passersby hope they start a conversation about what the structure could become.
"We're right next door to Live Arts and Second Street it would be nice to see it become part of an arts district. You could add condos to the top but it would be cool to make it a second street hub for arts and culture," said passerby Matthew Slats.
Jim Tolbert of Charlottesville's Neighborhood Services Development says there has been no progress made on development of the building in recent months.
