Trump Winery The First to Harvest Grapes in Central Va.

Aug. 8, 2014

It’s harvest time at Trump Winery.

"We finished the pinot noir yesterday and we're going on to the chardonnay and all of the shardonnay is gonna go into our blanc de blanc program and our sparkling reserve," mentions wine maker Johnathan Wheeler.

The next seven days are dedicated to harvesting 95 acres of grapes. This harvest is one of the first in Virginia.

Trump Vineyards harvest their grapes a couple weeks before everybody else when the grape is a little bit more acidic, that's because they specialize in sparkling wines.

They don't have much time to harvest these grapes either.

"As the sugar rises the acid drops so we're normally we're trying to pick in the sweet spot to get just enough acid for the sparkling wine and enough sugar to make the fermentation happen to get a good alcohol percentage," comments Wheeler.
