Albemarle County police are investigating an accident that left one woman dead and her husband badly hurt. It happened at the intersection of Ivy Road and Garth Road just after noon, stalling traffic for hours.
Many witnesses at the scene said this was one of the worst accidents that they've ever seen. Four cars were involved. Police say 75-year-old Mary May was driving an Acura and swiped one car before slamming into the back of a tractor-trailer who was waiting to turn.
She then hit another car. Witnesses say May was thrown from her car and decapitated. One man had to cover her up until police arrived.
"Currently we're investigating it, looking at all of the things that are out here present, the evidence, the vehicles, anything that's out here on the roadway that will give us an idea," said Lt. Jim Bond of the Albemarle County Police Dept.
May's husband is being treated at UVa hospital. None of the other three drivers were injured. So far, police have not filed any charges.
