Albemarle County School officials said this situation is a confidential personnel matter and that's why they're not able to share much information, but they did say they had no idea a former Albemarle High School girls soccer coach, Raja Jabbour, was involved in child porn.
Before Albemarle High School offered Raja Jabbour a job as an assistant junior varsity girls soccer coach four years ago, officials did a background check.
The director of the school system, Dr. Diane Behrens, said at the time Jabbour's record showed no prior criminal history.
"There were no problems at all at that point?" a reporter asked.
"Not from our state check," said Dr. Behrens.
School officials gave Jabbour the green light to coach girls soccer.
But about two years later, in 2004, Jabbour was arrested for traveling to Ohio to meet up with a child, who turned out to be an undercover officer.
The U.S. Attorney's office couldn't tell us what became of that charge, but they said Jabbour continued to look at child porn.
As of April 19, 2006 Jabbour was arrested again. This time for allegedly having digital pictures, movies, and Internet chats with children as young as 12, on his home and work computers.
School officials said it's something they were unaware of.
"We weren't aware of anything," said Dr. Behrens.
Jabbour was released from his coaching job at Albemarle High School just days later on May 2, 2006.
Jabbour is being held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail awaiting a bond hearing.
The judge wanted to release Jabbour on a $50,000 bond, but the U.S. Attorney's Office has filed an appeal, saying he is a danger to the community. Jabbour's attorney did not want to comment.
Jabbour could face 10 years in prison if he is convicted of these charges.
