A car crash in Louisa County claimed the life of a Richmond woman late Saturday night.

Police say 21-year-old Melis Ackali drover her Honda into the left lane of a two lane road, attempting to pass the vehicle in front of her. That's when she collided head-on with a pickup truck.

It happened just before midnight on Courthouse Road near Route 765, just south of Louisa.

A state trooper investigation revealed that the 21-year old was trying to pass in a no-passing zone, as she headed south toward Interstate 64. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the pickup, Bernadette Whitlock of Mineral, was seriously injured in the crash and transported to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

The crash is still under investigation by Virginia State Police.

Police also say Ackali was not wearing a seat belt. It was unclear if the driver of the pickup truck was wearing hers.
