28th Annual Batteau Festival Comes to Scottsville

June 19, 2013

The 28th annual Batteau Festival is a week-long event from June 15-22 that celebrates the flat-bottomed wooden boats that once carried tobacco, grains and other goods along the James River.

The boats travel from Lynchburg to Richmond and Wednesday they will make a stop in Scottsville.

This is the biggest event of the year for residents in the Scottsville. There will be live music, food and dancing all starting at 2pm at Canal Basin Square.

The goal of the festival is to preserve the boats that once moved cargo along the river.

One concern during Wednesday's events could be high water levels. Over the past few days severe rain has raised the water levels along the James River to between seven and eight feet. The cut-off point for most river rafting businesses is six and a half feet.

The festival will still take place, but it is important to take precautions if you plan on traveling on the river.
