A fire badly damaged a home off Shores Road in Fluvanna County Tuesday morning.
Five people inside the home at the time made it out safely.
Based on where the flames were coming from, investigators think the fire may have started near the couch on one side of the home.
Five different fire crews responded to the scene to help put the fire out.
A smoke detector woke the family up, and that's when they noticed the flames. They were able to get outside and call for help.
"It does show the importance of a smoke detector," said Mike Brent, Fluvanna County Fire Chief. "It did alert them that it was something going on."
Fire Crews have not said what the extent of the damage is yet. They are still trying to determine the cause.
