People Coping With the Heat

All across Virginia, steaming temperatures had people doing everything they could to keep cool. Temperatures reached up to 96 degrees in the area and that's before you factor in the humidity. It was enough to keep some people indoors, but not others who found the perfect way to beat the heat at the pool.

"I'm just trying to get out of the heat, it is so hot and humid today," said one parent.

While kids spent the day keeping cool in the pool, their parents made sure there was plenty of sunscreen and water to go around.

"We keep ourselves really hydrated with water and it's even fun to get an ice pop," said one mom.

The pool manager at Washington Park says the hotter it gets the more crowded it gets, so he constantly makes rounds to make sure everyone's okay.

"In our walk arounds, if we see people who are sweating profusely or see people who are looking kind of people, then we'll respond to that," said pool manager Bill Byers.

Over at the fire department, EMS officials were surprised they didn't have an increase in calls today, but say typically when the temperatures soar, so do the calls for heat exhaustion.

"A lot of time it's for people working outside or a lot of times for the elderly," said EMS Administrator Linda Johnson.

Fortunately, they are prepared. Each truck is filled with extra water, and fire crews can cut back on the gear the wear. With the temperatures so high though, officials warn to stay indoors as much as possible.

"Definitely hydrate yourself everyday, actually not just on hot days, if you keep up hydration throughout these summer months, you'll do a lot better with this type of weather," said Johnson.
