New Dominion Bookshop on the downtown mall held a short story salon for local writers on Saturday.

The Piedmont Writer's Institute hosted the gathering to encourage writers to share their short stories. Each writer was given a ten minute limit and the stories will be considered for full publication on the institutes's website.

"We have about a dozen people here and everyone had the opportunity to read their stories and a wide variety of stories and it was a lot of fun and I think it's something that we need in Charlottesville just to encourage people. It's free and there's coffee and cookies and it's a very relaxed atmosphere for people," Tim Lewis, of the Piedmont Writer's Institute said.

Saturday was the first time for the gathering, but the institute hopes to start holding writer's salons every two or three months.
