Advance Mills Bridge in northern Albemarle County is slated to reopen in a few weeks.
Structural damage caused its closure earlier this year.
VDOT said the bridge has a three ton restriction but that didn't stop heavy vehicles from crossing.
Once it reopens no emergency vehicles, buses or even pick up trucks with heavy loads will be able to use the connector.
“It is a safety concern and we can not be in a position of allowing a structure that we know is unsafe, and that is unsafe due to the types of vehicles that are using it to remain open,” said VDOT Spokesperson Lou Hatter.
County police will enforce the restrictions in the short term and if that doesn't work the bridge will be closed permanently.
