The interim dean of the UVA Office of African-American Affairs is diving into his new position.
58-year old Maurice Apprey, who was the professor of psychiatric medicine, plans to maintain and expand the changes that the previous dean, Rick Turner already made.
Apprey knows there has been negativity surrounding Turner's retirement and Apprey said in order for the University to move on, the students must talk about it.
"There are any number of people who have had experiences like [Turner's] so the irony is not to try and push it away, but to make it part of a growth experience for [the students]," said Apprey.
Earlier this month, Rick Turner admitted lying to federal prosecutors about a known drug dealer and signed an agreement to avoid a federal trial. Shortly after, he announced his retirement.
